Oji Paper Group : R&D

The Oji Paper Group makes an important contribution to society through research and development activities targeted toward the discovery of new possibilities in paper and the forests and trees from which it is made. New technologies, products and services are the driving force for continuing growth and success, and the Oji Paper Group is working to accelerate the creation of new advances by increasing its focus on research and development.

New Business & Product Development Center advances and supports the development of the new businesses and new products. Through such activities as market research and support for development projects, the center links market needs and R&D "seeds" and promotes commercialization.

Research & Development Division provides overall coordination of the Group's R&D system.

Targeting on the creation of the new values, Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL) is developing original and competitive technologies. ATL is primarily responsible for R&D of functional sheet materials (e.g., functional films with nano-structured surface, adhesive films, anti-scratch films, capacitor films and heat-resistant films), bio-based products (e.g., bioethanol and cellulose nanofibers), and ecological technologies. We are also conducting technology search and marketing, which provides underlying foundations of our development projects.

We conduct the innovative research aimed at the fusion of adhesion, detachment and infomation media technologies in order to produce innovative and high value-added products. We continue to research for customers to offer the environmentally friendly and safety product in the future.

We develop the fundamental technologies for pulp and paper manufacture. We focus our expertise on quality control, product development, environmental protection and cost reduction. To achieve these objectives, we work closely with our mills, subsidiaries and affiliates, both domestic and overseas.

We evaluate the printability of the prototypes and the products from the view point of customers by using proofing, printing and post-printing machines. The results are used for quality control, product development and cost reduction of the Oji Paper Group's products.

In view of securing raw materials and environmental technology on a world scale, we are increasing productivity of plantation abroad through mainly creating new species which are suitable for afforestation area and paper manufacture, using freely our technology of cultivating and breeding species with biotechnology. Regarding biotechnology applications, we are participating in national project and forwarding our development efficiently.

Highly analysis and evaluation technology are indispensable to keeping and improving high-quality products and development of new products. We, as the section supporting for entire Oji Paper Group, are solving products quality issues using the most advanced analysis devices. The Center is also responsible to develop new paper evaluation and material analysis technology. We are awarded many kinds of domestic and foreign prizes. Our technology has been highly evaluated.
